No funky rubbery smell because its a mixture of natural fibers and PER, which also makes it super easy to keep my grip; now my hands rarely slip no matter how much I sweat (unlike with my previous mat, a junky Gaiam one). I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 because bits of the material are starting to come off with wear, but I've had it for about a year ago and use it pretty frequently (3-4 times a week) so I guess that's to be expected!
